How to Make a Cross Stitch Gift Jar

!±8± How to Make a Cross Stitch Gift Jar

Cross Stitch Jar Lids are a quick and easy gift especially for co-workers. You can place just about anything inside the jar. Some ideas are:

* Candy

* Small Soaps

* Potpourri

* Quotes or Sayings

* Coffee, Cocoa or Tea Packets

* Tea light or Votive Candles

* Dog or Cat Treats

* Baby Grooming or Baby Travel items

You can even use a "Gift in a Jar" Recipe and top it off with a cross stitch picture for an extra special touch! They are quite easy to make and I want to share with you how I make mine. You can purchase a puff up kit but I find they are a bit pricey so I decided to make them differently. Decide on which type of theme or picture you would like to stitch and make sure that it will fit in either a regular or wide mouth jar lid.

You will need:

* Jar of your choice with a lid and ring

* Cross Stitch picture to fit

* Poster Board

* Quilt Batting

* Adhesive Sheet (usually found near the scrapbook section)

* Ribbon

You should be able to purchase all of these items at your local craft store or online.

Instructions:

Using the flat piece of the lid as a pattern, cut out a circle of poster board and adhesive. Using the ring of the lid, trace the inside part on the quilt batting and cut out. This will make your piece puff up a bit but not too much.

Layer your pieces as follows:

Place the adhesive circle on top of the poster board circle. Center the quilt batting on top of the adhesive. This should leave a small border around where adhesive shows. Then, place your cross stitch on top and cut the edges that hang over the poster board. With this type of adhesive, you can easily remove and center your cross stitch piece before cutting. You can then place the cross stitch piece into your lid and put it on the jar. Add ribbon for a finishing touch. Some also like to add lace or raffia.

Counted Cross Stitch and Waste Canvas

!±8± Counted Cross Stitch and Waste Canvas

Waste canvas is a product that allows the cross stitcher to stitch on non evenweave fabrics. It is available in different counts 8, 9, 10, 12 and 14 holes per inch.

There is no limit to the items you can decorate with this material it enables you to personalize clothing whether it is for you or as a gift.

So how do you use it?

Once you have chosen the item and the motif you wish to use.

Cut a piece of the canvas two inches larger than the design you have chosen then find the middle by measuring or folding four ways. Mark the middle with thread.

Attach the canvas to your chosen item using running stitches around the edge.

You are now ready to begin stitching there are two threads together then a gap between them this is where your needle takes the thread through. The needle needs to go through the centre because the threads of the canvas are removed on completion.

Once the design has been stitched take out the running stitches which held the material in place and cut the excess away but not too close to the stitching.

Waste canvas is held together with starch. Slightly dampening the canvas loosen the threads enabling them to be removed.

Each thread from the canvas is removed separately using a pair of tweezers is ideal. The threads will come out easily if not try a little more water. Also check that a thread has not been caught by the needle whilst stitching. If a thread has been caught cut either side of the stitch.

Once all the threads have been removed treat the item as you would with a normal cross stitch project. Gently wash in warm soapy water and rinse.

When dry iron gently on the wrong side laying it on a fluffy towel.

Remember if you are stitching a project such as table linen it is important to keep the reverse of the work tidy. So avoid trailing threads when possible.

Cross Stitch - The Cross Stitch Hobby

!±8± Cross Stitch - The Cross Stitch Hobby

Cross stitch is a very old embroidering technique and can form many different patterns or pictures. There's so many cross-stitch examples found all over the world and some of these works of art can be hundreds of years old. As a hobby, stitching is a good way to keep busy and have fun making beautiful patterns with all sorts of color in them.

There are different types of fabrics that can be used to make these wonderful designs, but aida fabric is by far the most widely used fabric. The tiny holes in aida fabric can assist with stitch placement which can make the project easier. This type of fabric is also available in so many different colors it can help create some cool designs.

Linen fabric is also good to use for stitching and is a certain type of even weave fabric that is ideal for these projects. There are a lot of different kits available and they come with everything needed to make the picture or pattern on the kit. Let us say someone wanted to create a picture of the statue of liberty then all they have to do is order the kit and follow the simple instructions to achieve this beautiful work of art.

There are many different types of holiday kits that can be purchased such as Christmas and Easter. When doing stitching remember that there's so many pictures, and patterns out there to create it will never get boring.

Many of the kits purchased do not cost very much at all and this is the perfect way to start this hobby inexpensively and easily. Kits come in all different sizes from small to very large like a painting hanging at the local museum. The size will have an impact on the price, in other words a small kit will probably be much cheaper than a large one. Most people think that cross-stitch is hard, but the fact is its very affordable, easy and enjoyable to do.
