Counted Cross Stitch and Waste Canvas

!±8± Counted Cross Stitch and Waste Canvas

Waste canvas is a product that allows the cross stitcher to stitch on non evenweave fabrics. It is available in different counts 8, 9, 10, 12 and 14 holes per inch.

There is no limit to the items you can decorate with this material it enables you to personalize clothing whether it is for you or as a gift.

So how do you use it?

Once you have chosen the item and the motif you wish to use.

Cut a piece of the canvas two inches larger than the design you have chosen then find the middle by measuring or folding four ways. Mark the middle with thread.

Attach the canvas to your chosen item using running stitches around the edge.

You are now ready to begin stitching there are two threads together then a gap between them this is where your needle takes the thread through. The needle needs to go through the centre because the threads of the canvas are removed on completion.

Once the design has been stitched take out the running stitches which held the material in place and cut the excess away but not too close to the stitching.

Waste canvas is held together with starch. Slightly dampening the canvas loosen the threads enabling them to be removed.

Each thread from the canvas is removed separately using a pair of tweezers is ideal. The threads will come out easily if not try a little more water. Also check that a thread has not been caught by the needle whilst stitching. If a thread has been caught cut either side of the stitch.

Once all the threads have been removed treat the item as you would with a normal cross stitch project. Gently wash in warm soapy water and rinse.

When dry iron gently on the wrong side laying it on a fluffy towel.

Remember if you are stitching a project such as table linen it is important to keep the reverse of the work tidy. So avoid trailing threads when possible.
